Developing your first roll at home
Sunday, 16 August 2026
The step that scared me for a year turned out to be the easiest: loading the reel in a changing bag. Ten minutes of practice with a dead roll in daylight and it stops being frightening.
After that it is just timed chemistry at a steady temperature. Developer, stop, fixer, wash. The first negatives I pulled out of the tank were thin and uneven, and I still have them pinned above the sink.
The whole kit cost less than a dozen lab develops, and the roll is ready the same evening instead of a week later.
